2012 colour of the year

Pantone might have picked orange, but 'i do' it yourself blog readers have voted and aqua/turquoise is their choice for 2012s top colour.

Closely followed by last years pick of green, purple was also still popular. Making the biggest jump in popularity this year - silver - going from 10th to 5th place. Black has also seen an increase from last years vote. Perhaps the biggest surprise is blue, dropping from the third spot to 10th.

DIY project: white suitcases

Suitcases can make fantastic props and decorations for weddings, and look amazing in your home afterwards. Pretty easy to come by, just scour your local markets and antique stores. But if you're looking for more chic than shabby, a lick of white paint can transform them.

Just give your suitcase a good clean before you start painting, a coat of primer is a good idea then your white paint. A few stacked together make a great feature or open them up to use as a card box or seating chart display. If the inside needs a tart up too, try decoupaging some old map images or just give it a coat of white paint too.

DIY project: pillow clouds

What aviation wedding would be complete without a few fluffy clouds to fly around in? Here the photographer cut up old pillows, but you can also use new quilting batting or stuffing to create your own sky!

You will need: 
Quilting batting or stuffing
scissors
fishing wire
sticky tape

How to:
1. Tear up sections of stuffing into roughly the size you would like the cloud
2. Stretch and fluff out the material to create a shape you’re happy with
3. Wrap your fishing wire around the cloud leaving a long line for hanging, and re-plump the cloud were necessary.
4. Then simply attach the line to the ceiling with a bit of sticky tape

It's real wedding time again. And this month we have a stunning vintage aviation inspired affair. The venue was the amazing Planes of Fame Air Museum in California, photographed by the lovely Heidi Ryder - who clearly had a lot of fun with those gorgeous antique planes for props.

Justine and Stephen set the scene for their vintage aviation wedding with 'i do' it yourself's antique chic boarding pass invitation and a custom map design. A simple craft paper envelope all adds to that old fashioned feel. 

After a traditional church ceremony they headed to the very unusual airplane hanger reception venue. Beautifully styled in elegant black and white, the old hanger came to life full of 1940s glamour.

Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa

Last year we saw an increasing number of couples set off on their wedding adventure at an aviation museum. Most venues are able to accommodate both the ceremony and reception, and provide a setting that the guests will never forget. There seems to be no shortage of US options, but what about down under?

The idea hasn't quite taken off in Australia and New Zealand yet but there are a few museums and airports offering wedding packages:

It's a new year and love is definitely in the air. This month we're taking inspiration from the past, from a time when the height of glamour and romance was air travel.
It's probably the biggest photo prop you're likely to come across - the airplane - but it's perfect for destination weddings, a military wedding and for couples who met on a plane or just like to travel.

Airport runways have been transformed into ceremony locations, hangers make the ideal reception venue and some couples are even getting married in flight. Aviation weddings are really taking off!
