2011 wedding colours

2011 wedding colours

Pantone might have picked pink but the i do it yourself blog readers have gone for green as their wedding colour of choice for this year. Purple came a very close second while poor old grey wins the wooden spoon for coming in last.

If you're having trouble choosing a wedding colour scheme, your favourite colour is a great place to start. We'll be posting more this year about trends and colours so watch this space, and remember if you're really stuck drop us an email or comment on our facebook page and we'll see if we can help!

real wedding: Thera and Brian

We have a gorgeous real wedding to share today thanks to Sandy from Red Lotus Photography. This beautiful vintage travel themed wedding was well thought out and full of lovely destination details. Bride and groom Thera and Brian brought along an old suitcase and camera to use as photo props, which as you can see, looked fantastic. The wedding rings really pop against the old leather.

They made their own place cards designed to look like postcards, each one was even personalised with a note to their guests. The table numbers were places the couple had travelled to with a little story to read. And the card box was gorgeous - a suitcase covered in lace and trimmings!

DIY project: postcard table numbers

postcard table numbers

Here's a super cute idea to identify wedding tables - use an old postcard to represent each table rather than a number. You can frame them or use a table sign holder. Quick and easy and a little quirky.

mapping it out

world map escort

Here is another great idea for showing your guests to their seats. Grab yourself a world map, we've used one of the free downloads we mentioned earlier {here} and printed it out large format, or you can use a store bought poster.

We've given our map more of an aged look with a couple of coat of shellac and glued it over a cork board. Next cut out some simple little flag shapes and write your guests name on one side and table number on the other, then just pin them onto the map!

welcome aboard

retro plane seating chart
chalk board seating chart
periodic table seating chart

We were recently asked the question, 'why do I need a seating chart at my wedding'? While its true many brides to be are steering away from some of the more formal wedding traditions, a seating chart doesn't have to be stuffy and boring! In fact it can be a great opportunity to add a little style or humour to your wedding day.

We've been busy little bees this month designing some fabulous new printable wedding reception seating charts, so you're guests can find their way in style:

The retro plane is perfect for a travel or destination wedding. Designed to look like an airplane seating plan, guests names are shown on each seat along with their table number. Shown here in blue and red but available in any colour to match your wedding scheme.

If you love that chalkboard look this beautiful wedding seating chart is designed to look just like a bistro menu but its a printable poster! (And rather than displaying meals and prices, it shows your guests' names and table number.) With a lovely aged, dusty chalkbaord background, the fonts even look as though they have been handwritten in chalk too.

Add an element of fun to your wedding with a clever seating chart. Guests find their initials designed to look like an abbreviated element - their table number is shown above, just like it's atomic number! Guests full names are also shown to avoid any confusion. It even comes in the shape of a periodic table that has been handrawn with biro onto grid paper. A really fun and unusual way to show your guests to their seats!

All available in the i do it yourself shop starting from $50.

vintage travel decorating ideas

vintage travel deco

It's not surprising a vintage stlyed wedding is so popular, try these gorgeous decorating ideas..

Credits: Grab yourself some old globes from markets and antique stores, they make the perfect table centrepieces! There are endless possibilities for vintage postcards: Frame them to make table numbers, peg them up as escort cards or ask people to write a messages on the back for a unique guest book! You can even scatter them on tables for cute decorations. Julia and Yuriy's travel themed wedding deco included paper plane bunting and maps, via Green Wedding Shoes

Stacks of old travel books make great feature decorations, especially when topped off with a vase of pretty flowers. (pic unknown). Peg maps along string for a quick and easy banner, a great backdrop behind the cake or for photos, by Stephanie Williams Photography. Make this cute paper plane mobile from the ruffled blog we mentioned last year. Add some vintage style with print at home antique chic menu cards from the 'i do' it yourself website. Old luggage is perfect to style the reception venue. Great for everything from an escort card display to a card box, not to mention coming in handy when packing everything up!

steal that style: map bouquet

map bouquet
Paper rose bouquet by Kim + Phil Photography

Create your very own handmade paper bouquet that will last a lifetime.

There are quite a few different techniques to make a paper rose, you might like to check out our other project {here} which uses just a simple circle. These are very quick to make and are great for place cards or scattered as table decorations. This project builds on that template with the addition of a scalloped edge round one side but it's a little tricky - so we've done the hard part and designed a template for you, free to download from the 'i do' it yourself website.

cut out paper rose template

What you will need:
The free paper rose template downloaded from here
Paper-covered floral wire or pipe cleaners
Floral or green masking tape

DIY project
Step 1. Start by downloading the free template from our website here and print it out. Either print directly onto your chosen paper or you can cut it out and trace round. The A4 template creates quite small roses so you might want to enlarge it on a photocopier for bigger blooms.

Step 2. Cut out the coil, one side will be scalloped and the other flat.

Step 3. Using a ruler or similar, firmly but gently pull the coil along the edge of ruller to help it curve a little. (This is similar to the way you would get ribbon to curl by running it along the edge of scissors)

Step 4. Get your pipe cleaner and glue the start of the coil to it, then being rolling the paper around adding the occasional drop of glue to help it hold but remember this with affect how tight therefore oh big the bloom with big.

Step 5. Once you're done rolling fix the end with some green tape and wrap it all the way round the pipe cleaner to make your stem.

This is just one of many ways to make paper flowers, so watch this space and we bring you more DIY flower projects this year.

paper plane wedding toss

paper plane toss

We love this idea for the wedding toss - rather than rice or bird seed ask guests to throw paper planes after the ceremony or when you leave the reception. Have a basket of planes ready to throw, of course they are super easy to make so this wont take long, or display them in an old suitcase to keep the travel theme going.

They also make fantastic props for engagements shoots, below, this couple used paper planes folded from old maps to make their photos a little more fun.

antique chic travel stationery

antique chic travel range

Set the scene in vintage style for a destination or travel themed wedding. From boarding pass invitations and postcards, to passport covers for your wedding programs, the antique chic travel range is a unique and beautiful wedding stationery collection.

Lets start with the invitations which resemble a real boarding pass or ticket. They feature a beautiful combination of typewriter and handwritten fonts to add to that vintage vibe and feel as thought the ticket has actually been filled out by hand. There is also a lovely 5x7 or A5 traditional sized invitation available.

There are two save the date options to choose from too. The cute retro postcard or the luggage tag style. And remember these can be always be used for something other than a save the date!

Matching table numbers, menu cards, rsvps and thank you cards are also available. The cute little luggage tags shown above can be used as unique place cards or escort cards, even favor tags - and that lovely antique paper look is all part of the file, no special paper required.

Starting from just $15 visit the i do it yourself shop to see more.
